With all the health care coverage and hoopla, these issues have been brushed under the media rug. It's interesting that during the Civil Rights movement the media is what allowed Americans all across the country to see what was really going on with the racial issues especially in the South. Today, why is it less important to report on? I have also noticed that some racial issues or assaults especially against whites rarely are reported. Some might say that "Hate crime laws are designed to punish the thoughts of white, straight, males. Only blacks, homosexuals, Hispanics and Muslims (women, too, on a good day) are protected under these laws. (1)" Are we only shining light on some of these cases now that there is a mixed-race president in the White House that looks like any other black male? What about those pockets of protester that are being seen at the Tea Party meetings and marches? Do we choose to say nothing to them only because they are not shouting the "N" word? We need to put these issues back in the forefront of the media and ensure ALL PEOPLE no matter their race, creed, color, sexual orientation, or religion are protected under these laws. And reporting on these issues should also be impartial. Tell me what you think. Are the laws essentially punishing white men for the actions of their ancestors by allowing them not to be protected from "minority" abuse? Why do you think the media report on these issues differently?

I really like that you are completely prepared to take on such a heavy, yet important issue. I honestly believe that since we have elected a "black" president many Americans feel as though racism is over. This is not the case at all. Did you happen to see the Jimmy Cater interview? He claimed that Rep. Wilson's comment toward Obama is based solely on race, and that the opposition Obama gets is also race related. I am not completely sold on Carter's opinion, however I feel that many people do distrust him because he does not look like the other Presidents. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteWell Rush Limbaugh is already calling for Bus segregation....Tea parties with no clear message and some are quick to dismiss Carter? it's no wonder the South turn red the moment black people have rights...You will always have blacks that blame Whites for their problems and vise-versa but you can't argue against ignorance. You have people jobless blaming government, as if the government took their jobs oversea...funny enough they think the free market will fix the problem it created and meanwhile let's blame the other people.
ReplyDeleteI think you bring up a great point in that what America typically believes is the stereotype of the white, straight, racist male. That video was a perfect example of how racism affects EVERYONE. Clearly, this country has not at all moved past the point of hatred because of a difference of skin color. America has taken great steps in achieving equality since the days of slavery but I believe, in a nation that is striving to reach the top of everything, whether that be technology, agriculture- whatever it is, we want to be on top. What country doesn't want this? But how can we achieve that when our citizens can't even learn to accept EVERYONE. Not only whites, but african americans, Asians, Hispanics, Middle Easterners, whatever, need to release their barriers and accept that we are all here on this planet together. We have to learn to accept differences, embrace them, and move on in order to achieve what our founding fathers wanted for this country in the first place- liberty and eqaulity for everyone.
